Cavalry Portfolio Services – My True Story
“How To Keep Cavalry Portfolio Services From Destroying Your Credit”

I had a bad experience with Cavalry Portfolio Services. They trashed my credit report and my life turned upside down almost overnight.

A common tactic among debt collection agencies is to essentially hold your credit score hostage until you pay off your debts. If an agency like Cavalry Portfolio Services is using this tactic on you, don’t despair! If your situation is anything like mine, you have a great chance of getting black marks from Cavalry Portfolio Services off of your credit report with the help of Lexington Law credit repair service.
I got involved with Cavalry Portfolio Services when they bought an unresolved debt from Sears. I had opened a Sears charge, missed a few payments, and then disagreed with Sears about the interest charges and fees they placed on my account. I’d written to Sears explaining my position, paid off what I thought I owed, and then I guess I just assumed the situation was handled.
Big mistake! Sears ultimately sold my debt to Cavalry Portfolio Services, which is a fancier, friendlier way of saying Cavalry Portfolio Collection Agency. I tried contacting Sears again, but I discovered that once they’ve sold a debt, they no longer have any say in the matter. Cavalry Portfolio Services wasn’t collecting on behalf of Sears–instead, they were collecting for themselves! No wonder they weren’t interested in hearing my side of the story. All they wanted was to get paid.
Since collection agents work on commission, their pay-me-now attitude is understandable, if not appreciated. On some level, I understand that debt collectors are just working people like me. I can forgive “Rick,” the Cavalry agent who worked my account, for calling me incessantly and interrupting my evenings at home with my family. He’s just doing his job. Besides, it can’t be much fun to spend all day calling people who hate you. At times, I almost felt sorry for him.
What I have more trouble accepting is the company culture that encourages people like “Rick” to treat customers in a very pushy way, without compassion or respect for family time, all in the name of making money. I know for a fact that Cavalry Portfolio Services bought my debt at a fraction of the true cost. That’s common practice for collection agencies. So it really bothered me that Cavalry Portfolio Services was trying to add to their already substantial profit by littering my account with interest charges and fees.
Even though “Rick” sometimes tried to adopt an attitude of “helping” me, I knew that he was just out to make a buck for his company. I didn’t feel like I needed “help” creating a payment plan for a debt that I felt was inaccurate in the first place!
As time went by, I learned not to engage with “Rick.” He was not really my friend, he wasn’t acting in my interests, and talking to him on the phone was just a waste of time. Cavalry Portfolio Services had one outcome in mind: me paying everything! They really weren’t interested in discussing anything else.
I was definitely annoyed by all the letters and phone calls I was getting from “Rick” and his colleagues at Cavalry Portfolio Services, but I didn’t do anything about the situation.

Cavalry Portfolio Services was Ruthless with my credit report. My score dropped drastically - I could not believe the impact it had.
Then one day I happened to check my credit score with TransUnion. It was 501. You can imagine how shocked I was. I had no idea one little problem with a company like Cavalry Portfolio Services could be so damaging to my credit. I realized that Cavalry Portfolio Services had reported my debt as a collection item, and now my credit was completely trashed. I checked Experian and Equifax, in the vain hope that Cavalry hadn’t gotten to them yet. No luck. They showed the exact same thing as TransUnion did: a big fat F rating and 501 points.
I decided to really go on the offensive at that point. I started arguing with “Rick” on the phone, and I sent multiple letters to Cavalry Portfolio Services, explaining my position and demanding that they remove the collection items from my credit report.
I don’t know what made me think that I could handle this on my own! Rather than making progress, I actually made a bunch of mistakes that probably hurt my chances of successfully disputing the debt.
First of all, you should NEVER rely on the phone for debt dispute. You need to send letters so that there is a written record of your communications with Cavalry Portfolio Services. If you do end up agreeing to a payment plan, again, you should be sure to get the terms in writing!
Second, you should use letters wisely. Don’t send a ton of rambling explanations and complaints to a debt collector like Cavalry Portfolio Services. They could decide your dispute is frivolous and begin ignoring your letters completely. Instead, you should send a few well-worded letters that show you have an understanding of your legal rights. If you can’t do this on your own, hire a lawyer.
Lastly, I completely missed my chance to ask for a debt validation. There’s a limited time window for initiating debt validation, and by wasting time ignoring the situation and then sending unprofessional communications, I missed it. My time would have been better spent researching my rights and getting legal help, rather than arguing and complaining.
Needless to say, I made no progress with Cavalry Portfolio Services on my own. Eventually I realized I needed professional help in order to resolve the situation and, most importantly, to repair my credit. I knew I couldn’t get a new job, a new loan, or a new landlord until my credit improved.

Lexington Law Deleted Cavalry Portfolio Services from My Credit Reports within Days. My Score Increased as a result.
